Palitaw

Palitaw literally means “to surface” in Filipino. It is a popular rice cake that’s made of glutinous rice, shaved coconut, and toasted sesame seeds.

It is a common afternoon snack in Filipino households and can be bought even from local karinderyas as a sweet dessert.

Let’s try to make our own palitaw at home! Here’s how:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups glutinous rice flour
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup roasted sesame seeds
  • 1 cup grated coconut

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine glutinous rice flour with water and mix until a dough forms. Scoop about 2 tablespoons of dough and shape it into a ball.
  2. Flatten the ball using the palm of your hands.
  3. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add the flattened dough pieces and cook until they float.
  4. Once they float, remove them from the pot and let the excess water drain.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix sugar and roasted sesame seeds.
  6. Roll each rice cake in grated coconut, then in the sugar-sesame seed mixture.
  7. Arrange on a serving plate and serve.
